My Life – Chapter #1 LEAVING HOME

The English Teacher Blog – My Life Chapter # 1: “Leaving home”

Hi there,

Today I will start to share part of my life with you. This new section will be under the category “My Life” and remember to look up any new vocabulary in your dictionaries and if you need help leave me a message.

Chapter 1 “Leaving Home”

I tried to keep my eyes opened but couldn’t.  I just managed to see that my mother was dressing me up.

“You are going to see daddy”, she said.

Daddy?

“Wake up, it is time to go”.

At age four one doesn’t realize many things but in some way I knew that my short life was about to change dramatically. While I tried to figure out what was going on, I could hear my grandmother crying, grandpa kind of angry and my aunts hugging my and kissing me.

“Are you sure you want to do this Sonia”? granpa asked.

“I have to fight for my family.”

My parents were young when they had me and were consequently immature. Miguel was that typical social, extrovert guy who loved flirting and being the center of attention. My mother, quite the contrary was shy, old fashioned and very reserved.

They had a very passionate love but Miguel was not the man who a father wants for a daughter. Immersed in many juvenile issues, let’s say that he did not deserve Sonia. Mom was and is an angel.  Her heart is so pure and she is a real example of life. However mom fell in love and confronted Ernesto’s will.

I was caught in the middle not being able to be with Miguel but being brought up by my grandparents. Ernesto and Dora loved me genuinely and with their whole heart. I felt so special at my grandparents´ house and was so happy. In my young mind, I thought it was normal to have Miguel visit me every once in a while and Ernesto was my hero and the person to follow as a model.

“Mom, what.. .what’s happening? Where are we going?” I tried to find an answer.

“We are going to see Daddy, I told you”. It was too early to see him and I don’t remember seeing him in a while.

“Mom, why is everyone crying ?”. She suddenly realized that it wasn’t going to be easy .

You don’t need to do this, leave Carlos here. We will take care of him. Don’t ruin his life”.

“Leave my son?, Are you crazy?”

“Taking him with that man is going to destroy him.” implored Ernesto

“That man is his father and my husband and I am going to fight for this family” My mom started wiping her tears.

“Family? Father? You think he is Carlos’ father? Don’t be naive. We are his family and he is…” then he looked at me and I could see him break in silence, “…our son more than Miguel’s

I was confused and felt sadness in that house for the first time. Growing up there with my grandparents and aunts was full of joy but suddenly I was witnessing something new.

“We are going for a little trip ok sonny?” mom loved calling me that way.

“Can Papitomias and Guagua come too?”

“No baby, they can’t go now but listen, you have to trust me ok?” I loved mom so much. She was everything for me and I knew she wouldn’t harm me.

“OK mommy.”

I didn’t understand why my family was hugging me and crying. It is just a trip to see daddy. I will come back. However what was happening was an event that would change my life. I was about to know the real world. I wasn’t going to be the same anymore and mom did not know it.

While we went to the airport I hugged my mother and I knew that as long as I was with her I was going to be safe and nothing bad would happen to me.

“Everything is going to be all right sonny, we are on our way to see daddy. We are going to Mexico.”

“Where El Chavo del Ocho lives?”

I was then excited. This is going to be really fun.  I was wrong.
